Furious 7 is fastest ever film to zoom past US$1 billion mark at box office

Teen wizards, blue-skinned aliens and even Marvel's team of superheroes, it seems, are no match for fast cars.

Smash sequel Furious 7 has become the quickest ever film to earn US$1 billion (S$1.35 billion) at the box office, just 17 days following its worldwide release.

The seventh instalment in The Fast And Furious franchise was a full two days ahead of heavyweights such as Avatar (2009), Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) and The Avengers (2012) to achieve the feat, reported Forbes.com.

Its current total of US$1.009 billion - US$735.2 million overseas and US$273.7 million domestically - as of Friday puts it in 18th place on the list of top grossing movies of all time.

Industry insiders estimate Furious 7, which is already the most profitable film in the franchise, could even crack the top 10 after this weekend.

The film stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and the late Paul Walker.
