SINGAPORE - From healthier pizzas to curry chicken rice that can be eaten after a few minutes in the microwave, FairPrice stores are now featuring 50 local products in a Made in Singapore Fair.

This is the sixth year the supermarket chain is holding the event to promote local food to its shoppers.

It was launched at FairPrice Xtra at Jem in Jurong East on Thursday (Sept 7).

The fair will run across FairPrice stores until Sept 20.

Among the 50 products featured are new ready-to-eat meals by Taste Asia, fresh produce such as eggs, fish and vegetables, and even detergent and hand soap.

Said FairPrice deputy chief executive Tng Ah Yiam at the launch: "As a home-grown brand, FairPrice continues to support local produce and locally made products. Buying locally not only supports local companies, it also helps to diversify our sources and contribute to greater food security in Singapore."

Mr Tng also announced the injection of another $1 million to renew FairPrice's SME Suppliers Support and Development Programme, to help 320 local small and medium-sized enterprises.

Under this scheme, retailers pay SMEs within 30 days instead of 60, to help SMEs with their cash flow. SMEs also get discounts on fees for listing their products with the supermarket.

Mr Tng said: "Since 2012, FairPrice has invested over $5 million in this programme, which helps SMEs ease their cashflow requirements and boost their capabilities for business growth."
