SINGAPORE - A tipper truck was involved in an accident in the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel at around 10.50am on Monday (May 29), causing the exit to Nicoll Highway to be closed.

Photos sent by a Straits Times reader showed the truck tilted awkwardly on its left side as it blocked most of the exit.

Several motorists, who had stopped their vehicles behind the truck, were seen attempting to help the driver get out of his damaged vehicle.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman said the truck's driver, a man in his 60s, was taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The hospital was alerted to be on standby to receive him.

The Straits Times understands that the truck had hit a wall, which caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle before hitting a divider.

When ST visited the scene at around 1.15pm, the exit remained close to motorists. Police officers and Land Transport Authority (LTA) personnel present there were understood to be waiting for a heavy lifting crane to arrive and help stablise the truck.

LTA, in a tweet at 10.53am, said the Nicoll Highway exit (in the direction of the East Coast Parkway) was closed due to the accident.

SCDF dispatched a fire engine, a fire bike and an ambulance to the scene.

A police spokesman told ST that operations to move the truck began at 3.08pm, and it was moved aside at 4.14pm by two cranes.

The spokesman added that the truck was towed away at 5.37pm.
