The Straits Times' 11 wins at Asian Digital Media Awards: Here's a look at the winning works

The Straits Times clinched 11 awards, including four golds, at the 6th Asian Digital Media Awards on Wednesday (Nov 18), the biggest win so far for any publication at the annual event.

SINGAPORE - The Straits Times clinched 11 awards at this year's Asian Digital Media Awards, Asia's biggest digital event for news media.

It is the biggest win so far for any publication since the annual awards started six years ago.

Organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), this year's event attracted 133 entries from 14 countries and 36 publishers.

Here's a look at The Straits Times' 11 winning entries:

1. Best News Website (Gold)

The online portal of The Straits Times underwent a major revamp in July to mark the 170th anniversary of the newspaper. Some of the key changes include a mobile-friendly website, a cleaner design, more options to share the stories and a new paywall that allows readers read stories in their entirety.

2. Best Online Video (Gold)

"It Changed My Life" is a weekly video series which features Singaporeans who overcome the odds and turn their lives around.

It is helmed by The Straits Times' Senior Writer Wong Kim Hoh and directed by executive video journalist Shawn Lee Miller. This series also won the top prize last month at the World Digital Media Awards, beating competition from Latin America and Europe. Check out the series and watch more award-winning videos here.

3. Best Data Visualisation Project (Gold and Silver)

a. Ocean's Fury: Are We Ready? (Gold award)

The e-book and microsite are an extension of a 15-page special report which was published in the print edition of The Straits Times on Dec 20, 2014. The e-book and microsite offered more ways of telling the story using videos, interactive graphics and photo essays.

The cross-media project was commissioned to mark the 10th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 220,000 people across 13 nations. It involved more than 20 reporters, foreign correspondents and the digital content producers from The Straits Times' newsroom, and was the first major editorial collaboration between The Straits Times and other members of the Asia News Network.

4. Best Mobile Service (Silver)

ST Mobile Apps

The Straits Times apps for iPhone and Android devices were redesigned and launched together with the revamped newspaper and website on July 1 to celebrate the newspaper's 170th anniversary. Among other features, the new apps allow users to personalise their news feeds and share ST's content more easily.

5. Best Lifestyle Mobile Service (Gold)

The Life E-book Series

The monthly lifestyle magazine has articles on fashion, design, travel, food and more. It is available for free via ST Star e-books app for iPads and Android devices.

6. Best in Tablet Publishing (Bronze)

ST STAR E-books

The Straits Times Star E-books app for iPhone and Android devices features more than 30 titles so far. They include Lee Kuan Yew: The Final Journey; the Life magazine; Ocean's Fury: Are We Ready?; and Singapore's Jubilee Election: What Were Voters Really Saying?. The latest e-book 50 Food Myths Busted was published last Friday.

The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

The app has had more than 250,000 downloads since it was launched in June last year, with downloads for the books inside totalling more than 600,000.

7. Best in Reader Engagement (Silver)

Tribute Wall for Mr Lee Kuan Yew

More than 7,000 people wrote messages on the tribute wall, which is an interactive feature of the Remembering Lee Kuan Yew microsite. The tribute wall offered another avenue for Singaporeans to express their gratitude to Singapore's founding prime minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He died at age of 91 on March 23.

9. Best in Digital Advertising Campaign (Silver)

CapitaLand #BuildSG2065 was a successful cross-media advertising campaign that got readers thinking and talking about what Singapore would be like in 2065. More than 2,000 readers submitted their ideas on how to improve the built environment which Singaporeans will live, work and play in by the year 2065.

The top 50 ideas are showcased at an exhibition co-curated by The Straits Times and the ArtScience Museum. More than 120,000 people visited the exhibition which opened on July 17 and ended on Oct 4.
