Heroes Among Us: Mum steps up her game, for love of Kyra

When doctors gave her newborn six months to live, it was the start of a journey that would push Ms Magdelene Han to achieving the unthinkable with her daughter Kyra. ST PHOTO: SHAWN LEE MILLER

In 2005, when she was just 28, Ms Magdelene Han was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma Stage 2.

She underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and survived.

After her brush with cancer, Ms Magdelene Han was dealt another setback when her baby was born premature and later diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder macrocephaly-capillary malformation.

In 2011, she gave birth to her daughter Kyra.

But the baby was born premature and had to undergo three brain operations when she was just seven months old.

Baby Kyra was also found to have asymmetrical body parts and was later diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder macrocephaly-capillary malformation.

Doctors said Kyra would likely be a "vegetable".

"I gave myself a timeframe to grieve over it and just step up my game," said Ms Han, now 41, who was the keyboardist of the disabanded Singapore group The Great Spy Experiment.

"I realised I'm a mother now and I need to help her."

Today, Kyra is an active girl who has learnt to walk and loves being a "starfish" in the pool.

Ms Han's story is the fifth in our Heroes Among Us video series.
