A member of Taman Jurong Radiophone Taxi Service would have found himself in rarified company back in the 1980s and 1990s.

"If you wished to join, you needed to be recommended by existing members. This was not an easy place to get into," said driver Allan Lian, 68, who is chairman of the service.

Taman Jurong Radiophone Taxi Service is one of the few remaining taxi services that still use radiophone technology to connect customers with taxi drivers.

In 1976, the company was the first service to use radiophone communication in Singapore.

During its heyday, it had 400 drivers and received up to 1,200 customer calls daily.

Today, it has 140 drivers and the taxi kiosk at Yung Kuang Road receives about 300 calls a day.
