SINGAPORE - In January, Mr Eric Leong, 45, left his job as a car salesman after more than 10 years in the trade.

He had sold just over half as many new cars in 2021 as he did in 2019, and the showroom was often empty. On some days, he had only one walk-in customer during his eight-hour shift.
