SINGAPORE - No need to panic. Popular wonton noodle eatery Eng's Noodles is not closing down.

However, it is closing at its current premises at 287 Tanjong Katong Road on Feb 28 because the lease has ended. The eatery, which opened there six years ago, will relocate to a new shop space in the Katong area by May this year, owner Desmond Ng, 48, told The Straits Times.

The eatery was once a humble hawker stall at Dunman Food Centre, run by Mr Ng's father, the late Ng Ba Eng, known to most customers as Eng or Uncle Eng.

The hawker cut his teeth selling wonton noodles with his father from a pushcart. They would ply the streets of Joo Chiat, shouting "wonton mee" and beating two bamboo sticks to create a "tock tock" sound to draw customers out of their homes to buy from them.

The late Mr Ng, who died of a heart attack in 2013, was named a Singapore Hawker Master for wonton noodles in 2011. The annual award was given to top hawkers by The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.

The stall is famous for its spicy housemade chilli paste - commonly known as "gunpowder" to patrons - and juicy wonton. Customers say they also like the springy texture of the noodles.
