Venture beyond the housing estates and forests of Sembawang, and you will find Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang.

The mosque was built in 1963 by villagers who lived by the northern coast of Singapore.

By the end of the 1980s, kampungs in the Sembawang area had made way for redevelopment and the residents moved into housing estates.

These days, the mosque - with its old-world charm and nestled among lush greenery with the beach nearby - is generally quiet.

"During Islamic festivals, such as Hari Raya Haji and Hari Raya Puasa, the mosque gets crowded," said Mr Mohd Amin Latip, 68, chairman of the mosque's committee.

"Especially during Ramadan, you can see old friends sharing old stories with one another."
