Gordon Toh was struggling as a woodcut print artist in Taiping, Perak, in the 1970s and reckoned a diploma from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore could be his ticket to a brighter future.

But since he had no funds to finance such an undertaking, he decided he would work here for a couple of years first.
