Contrasting the high skyscrapers in cosmopolitan Singapore, sits a quiet shop along Neil Road, filled from floor to ceiling with statues of Taoist deities. They range from handphones, to a chair in size. Say Tian Hng Buddha Shop (translated as Heavenly Garden) has made, sold and repaired Taoist idols for 122 years. The shop is now the last surviving one in Singapore. An 87-year-old great-grandma who has worked in the shop for 70 years and has raised 7 children now runs workshops on Airbnb with the help on her grandsons to showcase the dying art of effigy-making. Executive photojournalist Jamie Koh drops by the shop to check out what goes on during one of these sessions.
