Think everything from edible helium balloons to hearty, slurp-worthy tulang. Newfangled fare is great for Instagram but some of the best eats include classic street food items. Here are seven tasty treats at this year's bazaar.

Follow me as I navigate my way through the annual Hari Raya Bazaar at Geylang Serai to suss out what to eat.

While new-fangled and novel offerings are great for the Gram - think rainbow-hued stretchy cheese toast, unicorn parfaits and edible helium balloons - I found that classics like otah from Ikan 1986 and shrimp fritters or vadai from Mr Wadeh not only taste great, but also offer the best bang for your buck.

RECIPES TO TRY

Here are four simplified recipes to whip up for friends and family.

Malaysian newspaper The Star has put together recipes for four classic Malay dishes including nasi goreng ulam or a fried mixed-herb rice, as well as rendang Taiping, a sweet chicken stew named after the Perak town that is similar to Penang's rendang mamak.

ST Food has a recipe by popular Israeli-British chef Yotam Ottolenghi, which was first published in The New York Times.

Create Moroccan flavours at home with his recipes for fish koftas in tomato and cardamom sauce, and mackerel with pistachio and cardamom salsa.
