SINGAPORE - When Billy Hogan first joined Liverpool in 2012 as chief commercial officer, the club's storied Anfield home stadium still featured flip-down seats in the main stand that were made of wood.

Some dated back to 1906, and while this gave the ground charm and character, they were also examples of how one of Europe's most successful clubs had lagged behind the times.
